Data from the Provincial Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Rzeszów shows that in 2024, there were nearly 1,500 fires in homes and flats across the Podkarpackie Province.

One of the most high-profile incidents was a fire in terraced houses in the Biała estate in Rzeszów, which broke out at the end of August 2024. Five residential buildings were on fire at the time, and the material damage was enormous. Another serious fire occurred in June 2025 in the Nowe Miasto estate. The fire started in a flat on the fourth floor of an 11-storey block. Although it was quickly brought under control, the damage caused will require lengthy repairs and a huge financial outlay.

Incidents of this kind highlight the importance of properly securing your most valuable possessions: documents, money, jewellery and other valuables. In such situations, a fire-resistant safe can protect your valuables from being lost entirely.

Why is it worth investing in a fireproof safe?

In the face of a rising number of fires in private homes and flats, more and more residents of the Podkarpacie region are deciding to purchase a fireproof safe. Time and again, following such tragic events, we see a rise in interest in safes that not only provide protection against theft but also against high temperatures and fire, which is crucial in the event of a fire.

A fireproof safe allows you to secure your most important documents (such as contracts, deeds, passports, insurance policies), cash, data storage devices (hard drives, USB sticks), jewellery and even keys, family heirlooms and other valuables. It also protects the contents inside from unauthorised access (which is particularly important for firearm owners). Some safes are fitted with seals which swell (as the temperature rises) to prevent flooding, which is crucial during firefighting operations.

What should you look out for when buying a fire-resistant safe?

Buying a safe is a serious matter. Very often it is a one-off purchase (a safe does not wear out, there is no need to replace it), so it is also a purchase “for years to come”. It is worth paying attention to several key parameters, which we discuss with potential customers during face-to-face meetings at our showroom in Rzeszów, as well as during telephone conversations:

1. Burglary resistance class: denoted by Roman numerals (from I to V) and S1, S2 and 0. Put simply – the better the safe is constructed, the higher its security class will be. For example, a safe in the basic S1 class has a single-walled body made of 3 mm sheet metal and double-walled doors, whilst a safe in class V has a multi-walled body (filled with special mixtures, including concrete), multi-walled, thick doors and, even if it is the smallest model in the series, it weighs several hundred kilograms, compared to one in the basic security class, which weighs just over ten kilograms.

2. Type of fire resistance: fire-resistant safes are mainly classified according to the European standards EN 15659 and EN 1047-1, as well as the Swedish standard NT Fire 017. These standards specify how long a safe is able to protect its contents from fire. Safes designed for storing paper documents or data storage media are classified as: LFS 30 P and LFS 60 P (PN-EN 15659) for paper, and according to the PN-EN 1047-1 standard as S60 P, S120 P for paper documents, and S60 DIS and 120 DIS for electronic media. Data storage media are far more sensitive to the effects of high temperatures (compared to paper documents), hence the distinction between fire-resistant safes for important paper documents and data storage media.

3. Size and capacity – these depend on what you plan to store and how much of it there is. We know from experience that the contents of a safe tend to increase over time. Our advice is always the same – if a safe seems suitable at the time of purchase, it means it will be too small in the future.

4. Type of lock – safes come as standard with a high-quality, secure key lock. However, there are other options to choose from: electronic (code-operated, with a keypad), combination (with a dial, operated by a cipher) and biometric (fingerprint-operated). An alternative to these locks is the option to open the safe via an app installed on a smartphone. Which lock is best depends entirely on the individual preferences of the safe’s user.

5.Certificates and approvals – it is worth choosing safes with certificates issued by independent institutions, e.g. IMP, ECB-S, VdS. These are the safest solutions, compared to so-called off-the-shelf, unclassified “metal containers”, which do not provide adequate protection.

6. Installation location – a safe can be installed in many places; the more discreet, the better. Depending on the place of installation, we distinguish between wall safes, floor safes, furniture safes and so-called free-standing safes. Some models require specific conditions: a wall or floor of sufficient thickness. For heavier models, the load-bearing capacity of the ceiling must be checked in advance. It is extremely important to check the transport route (if our team is to deliver, carry in and anchore the safe).

7. Type of safe – in addition to safes intended for domestic use (most commonly installed in private homes and flats), there are also products designed for business, including: drop safes and deposit safes – for shops and catering establishments, metal cabinets and armoured cabinets – ideal for places where large quantities of documents, and even works of art are stored, gun safes (designed for storing long guns, handguns and ammunition).

How much does a fire-resistant safe cost?

The prices of fire-resistant safes depend on many factors: burglary resistance class, fire resistance rating, capacity, type of lock and additional equipment. The cheapest models offer basic protection but do not always have the appropriate certifications. A high-quality safe is an investment that can protect possessions worth tens of thousands of zlotys. How much does a fireproof safe cost? The smallest, compact models are an investment of several thousand zlotys.
